India inspired online fashion brand Dancing Leopard Clothing has dropped into administration.
The Walsall-based business appointed Andrew Fender of Sanderlings as administrator on 19 December.
The company was founded in 2009 by Jade Hildreth and Jack Burrows following a trip around the world.
According to the group’s website the pair were inspired by the vibrant fabric markets in India and set out to create colourful clothes that made people feel good.
It made a range of women's boutique clothes from skirts to pyjamas, knitwear and dresses. Its trademark was its use of statement colours and bold, hand-drawn prints. It also highlighted its sustainability credentials with its design process involving the sourcing of eco-conscious fabrics.
It’s been featured in magazines such as Cosmopolitan and Vogue and worn by celebrities including Alison Hammond.
The brand first established itself in London before heading to Ibiza. It now operates from its warehouse in Walsall where it employs 27 staff, but last year opened its first flagship store in Ibiza Town.
According to its most recent filing to Companies House for the year to 31 March 2023 the company had net current assets of £843,226, down from the previous year’s total of £984,326.
In the report the directors said they were aware that “cash in the company has declined significantly in the current year following a decrease in turnover and increase in expenses due to an operational change. The directors are happy that the company have resolved these issues and have been profitable for the final months. The company’s cash flow has become more stable, however the directors note it will take time to build back the working capital.”
The UK retail sector had a tough 2024 with, according to figures from the Centre for Retail Research, almost 13,500 stores shutting for good. That was up nearly a third on the amount in 2023.
Rising costs, and lower consumer confidence have been blamed for the downturn.
