Leeds construction firm Irwins has entered administration, leaving 13 building projects unfinished.
KPMG was drafted in to the company after it suffered cash flow problems, while a total of 56 employees have been rendered jobless.
Irwin’s active projects at the time of the administrators’ appointment included work at the University of York, the Lambert Memorial Hospital in Thirsk and at several schools in Leeds.
Joint administrator Mark Firmin explained Irwins predicament: “Irwins suffered a significant drop in turnover over recent months as a large proportion of its work related to public sector projects.”
“Given the limited order book of the business, a sale was not a viable option and the company has had to be closed.”
The public sector’s recent austerity measures are yet to be fully felt by the construction industry. “The impact will deepen as the purse strings tighten” Mr Firmin predicted.
The Lambert Hospital had been closed for the work, which commenced in early November, and in-patients had been relocated to another hospital. The North Yorkshire and York Primary Care Trust are working to find a new contractor to complete the project.
