A Carlisle-based Christian book distributor has entered administration after a sharp decline in its turnover.
Dozens of are staff are at risk of losing their jobs after Trust Media Distribution (TMD), formerly Send the Light, called in administrators this week. The business will continue to trade in a “reduced capacity” as viable options are explored for the company’s future.
Glasgow business accountancy firm Scott-Moncrieff has been appointed administrators. The Carlisle News and Star reported that 10 staff could be made redundant immediately as turnover has fallen to “unsustainable levels”.
TMD has been a major supplier of Christian books, bibles, DVDs and music across the UK. A company spokeswoman said that its financial problems had been a result of changes introduced by business partners, which had decided to bring distribution and wholesale elements of its business “in house” in the UK.
She added: “This structural change was compounded by continued contraction in the trade as a whole leaving an organisation with the scale, infrastructure and cost base of TMD with no other option but to look at alternative business models.”
In 2012 the company, which operates out of a large warehouse in Kingston, cut its workforce from 70 to around 30. In a statement, Scott-Moncrieff said that the decision to enter administration had been a difficult one.
Pamela Coyne and Stewart MacDonald, from Scott-Moncrieff, have been appointed as administrators. Mr MacDonald said: “We will continue the work that has already been undertaken by TMD directors to explore the possibility of future trading options for the business and infrastructure.
“In the meantime, the business will continue to operate in a reduced capacity to facilitate the distribution of certain product lines.”
