WP Eglin, a West Yorkshire-based company that has been designing and making furniture since 1880, has ceased trading and is now in the hands of joint administrators.
The administrators Peter Sargent, Richard Kenworthy and Nick Reed of Begbies Traynor are to search for a buyer for the company’s intellectual property and name, together with its manufacturing facilities on Globe Works in Halifax, which offer redevelopment opportunities.
A sale of the entire company failed to materialise and the company stopped trading yesterday (8 September). Eglin had run out of funds and failed in its attempt to secure further financial backing.
The 23-strong workforce has been rendered jobless, and the administrators say they are doing what they can to assist the former employees to find new positions either with Job Centre Plus or through the administrators’ contacts.
Mr Sargent said: “It is always sad to see a business fail, particularly one with such a long heritage and loyal workforce. Eglin is a fairly small player in a congested market place, facing lots or larger competitors, and it was simply unable to secure the sales it needed to survive.”
The administrators expect plenty of interest in the manufacturing site from developers.
