Administrators are urgently searching for a buyer for one of Huddersfield's best-known retailers, the family-run company Thatchers Furnishings Ltd.
The store entered administration today, and Peter Sargent and Julian Pitts, of insolvency firm Begbies Traynor, have already begun the search for someone to buy it out of administration. The Dundas Street store will be closed for stock-taking today, but will reopen for a sale of goods to the public.
Mr Sargent described the firm as "a bastion of retailing traditional high quality furniture", but explained that it had suffered a downturn in trade in recent years, owing to a range of difficult market circumstances.
"Every effort is being made to save the jobs of the loyal and dedicated staff, but sadly no guarantee can be given," he said. "I am also concerned that there are a number of deposit customers and how these are dealt with will depend on whether there is a successor business."
The firm was founded in 1940 by John Herbert Thatcher, who had been a carpet fitter. It has been at its current premise since the early 1960s, and specialises in selling high quality furniture, beds, curtains, clocks, carpets and rugs.
