Browns Construction Group has entered administration with the appointment of Paul Stanley and Jason Greenhalgh from Begbies Traynor.
Owned by Headcrown Group, the business has been operating for 150 years after being established by Levi Brown in 1860.
With liabilities of £5 million, Headcrown decided to stop pumping money into Browns.
Browns had worked on residential development projects at Castlefield Locks and Plymouth Grove, Manchester, and schemes at Cheadle Hulme School and North Manchester General Hospital. Other works it had been involved in include several restoration projects at landmark buildings such as Manchester Cathedral.
Eight of its total 20 employees are retained to assist in recovering owed money from finished contracts, while the remaining 12 have been made redundant by the administrators.
A restructuring in July saw several employees lose jobs at Browns, and its offices close with its back office integrated into the Cruden Group, another Headcrown subsidiary. The move was an attempt to address volatile market conditions and cut down on overhead costs, Headcrown said in a statement released in July.
Administrator Mr Stanley has said that all current works, including a Dartmouth hotel, a scheme at Cardiff University and the build of homes in Wilmslow, will be halted.
