Birkby’s Plastics, a Yorkshire-based firm that specialises in making plastic products for cars, has entered administration.
Hunter Kelly and Charles King of Ernest & Young are the appointed administrators, and having failed to find a buyer for the business and assets, Birkby’s Plastics is to be wound down.
The timing of the winding down process was not revealed. Birkby’s will continue to trade while the administrators find new suppliers for its larger customers. Its 371 employees can expect to lose their jobs.
The business is located at a 24-acre site in Liversedge, West Yorkshire, and operates 71 presses for its work. It designs, moulds and assembles plastic items for the car and niche engineering sectors, which include glove box assemblies, accelerator pedals, seat back covers and mud flaps. Jaguar Land Rover, Honda and Nissan are some of its clients.
Mr Kelly commented on the situation, “We have undertaken an extensive sales process to identify a purchaser since the beginning of the year. Some interest was expressed, but none resulted in an acceptable offer for the business and assets.
“The company has been operating at a loss for a few years, a position it could no longer maintain.”
A loss of £875,000 was reported for the year to 2 April 2011 with sales of £31 million at Birkby’s Plastics.
