Groundworks contractor Barton Civil Engineering has entered administration amid concerns of a continued downturn in the construction industry.
David Willis at BWC Business Solutions is acting as the administrator to the contractor, which was a member of the Civil Engineering Contractors Association.
Barton Civil Engineering provided its services to various local authorities and NHS Trusts in the North East, however a steep drop in orders led to cash flow difficulties.
The firm’s demise comes as an even tougher year for construction firms in the North East has been predicted by the civil engineering trade body CECA.
Michael Henning, North East spokesman for the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, commented: “The acute shortage of new construction work in the region is seriously impacting across the sector.
“Costs of running a business are rising, while a cut-throat market is driving down fees and profit margins.”
Research undertaken by the Civil Engineering Contractors Association suggests that the North East and Wales remain the hardest hit. This is “a trend that regrettably looks like continuing during 2011” CECA director Douglas Kell added.
Established for over ten years, Barton Civil Engineering offered civil engineering, excavation and site clearance, concrete repairs and landscaping services from its base in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear.
