Thu, 17 Mar 2011 | ADMINISTRATION
A major caravan dealership in Taunton has entered administration after experiencing severe cashflow problems.
Somerset Caravans, which is based in Walford Cross, was placed into administration on Wednesday, with Ian Walker and John Kelly from Begbies Traynor retained as joint administrators.
The business administrators have retained 16 of the company's 21 staff as they embark on a search for a buyer, with the realistic intention of selling the company as a going concern.
Mr Walker said that the leisure business had been facing problems that had arisen from the poor economic climate and its effects on the tourism industry, as well as difficulties stemming from production and supply.
"It is a good business which offers not just caravans but a whole range of camping supplies and therefore is in a position to take advantage of the growing trend for family camping and caravanning holidays in the South West," Mr Walker said.
He added that the well-known, long-standing company was in a prime strategic position, on the outskirts of Taunton, next to the proposed new junction with the M5 - an unavoidable part of the well-travelled tourist route down to the tourist hotspots of Devon and Cornwall.
