Kirkstone Quarries has entered administration, leaving administrators examining options for the future of the Cumbrian company and its assets.
The quarrying business, which was established in 1949, ceased trading last week, after suffering the effects of a sluggish building trade, as well as competition from imported stone, especially from India, South America and China.
Administrators were appointed from Carlisle-based firm, Armstrong Watson, who made all of the company’s 39 employees redundant.
“We are assessing various options for the future of the company and its assets,” a spokesman for Armstrong Watson said. “Our investigations into the company’s affairs and the events leading up to the administration appointment are at an early stage. We are currently unable to comment on the likely outcome for the company or its creditors.”
The business closed down its showroom in Kendal in October, but opened a new display area at its headquarters and stone finishing facility in Skelwith Bridge, according to The Westmorland Gazette. The business’s main quarry was on the top of the Kirkstone Pass, but they also had an operation near Hawkshead. As well as the local outlets, the business also ran a showroom in Fulham in west London.
Kirkstone had won awards for its stone and slate products and had previously run a lucrative trade in providing items including flooring, counters, and water features for projects across the globe.
