Caithness Beef and Lamb, a meat processing plant in Wick, has been placed into administration.
The remote location of the facility was designed to provide an abattoir service for farmers in the North of Scotland who might otherwise have had to transport their animals over long distances.
However, the £4 million business only ever operated trial production runs and its abattoir, offices, processing and packaging facilities are yet to be used at full production.
According to the joint administrators, Iain Fraser and Tom MacLennan of RSM Tenon, strong competition and rising costs in the sector are to blame for the administration. A spokesman for the administrators said that the firm is hopeful of attracting interest from European farming and food processing businesses.
Mr Fraser added: “We are selling a virtually new plant that could be brought into production relatively quickly and easily. The plant took three years to design and build, and features some of the best slaughtering and food processing equipment available.”
In providing some of the most advanced slaughter services available to farmers in the region, Caithness Beef and Lamb had plans in place to develop a range of branded meat products, including sausages, prime cuts and the Scottish dish haggis.
Operating across North Yorkshire, the company has two divisions, one that provides IT infrastructure and one offering renewable energy solutions, including solar PV systems and electric vehicle charging points.
The group specialises in supplying and installing UPVC windows, doors and conservatories in a wide array of styles. Bespoke bathroom panelling and high-quality guttering products are also provided by the two companies.
The company is a well-regarded specialist provider of hygienic wall, floor, and ceiling cladding systems. To complement its core supply of PVC cladding, the business offers hot welded joints to prevent the build-up of bacteria and can supply stainles...
