Two medical practices in Leeds, Yeadon Tarn Medical Practice and Rawdon Surgery have announced plans to merge and operate as a single practice.
Two GPs have reached retirement age at the Yeadon practice and another at Rawdon is expected to retire early next year. The merge is seen as a way forward to keep both practices running by pooling resources together.
The two practices have been working closely together for a number of years and the merger aims to build on this success. The heads of each centre have said the buildings of practice will remain the same and patients will be able to stay with their same GP while also gaining the flexibly of additional services.
The merger of the two practices is proposed to take place in April 2019 and is expected to improve effective and sustainable primary care for the local population.
GP Partner at the Yeadon practice, Dr Adrian Rees said: “We chose to take this opportunity to make both practices stronger, successful and viable for primary care in the coming decades.
“One united practice will allow us to attract and retain new talent, across both clinical and support staff.
“More GP’s will afford us multiple benefits including the reduction of locum doctors, increased continuity of care, less administration for each partner and as a result an increase in GP appointments. This will also include increased out-of-hours and urgent care capacity.”
According to the British Medical Association, almost 40 per cent of GPs are expected to leave the profession within the next five years.
As part of its GP Forward View, an extra £2.4bn a year has been put forward by NHS England for general practice and a promise of 5,000 more family doctors by 2021.
